The Basel Autumn Fair, the largest and oldest amusement fair in Switzerland, is taking place from the 28th October to the 12th November 2017 (to the 14th November 2017 on the Petersplatz).

An over 540-year-old tradition

The Basel Autumn fair is more than just the usual funfair or amusement park. With its tradition stretching back over 540 years and its special customs, it really is a part of the city’s living heritage. This traditional inner-city fair, also radiates far into the three-country region and attracts around a million people to Basel from home and abroad. The charm of this public festival surely emanates from the extremely high appreciation the Basel population bestow on it.

History

On 11 July 1471, at the Imperial Diet in Regensburg, Emperor Friedrich III granted the Mayor of Basel, Hannsen von Berenfels, the right to hold the Basel Autumn fair «in perpetuity». It starts 14 days before St. Martin's day.

The first day of the fair is traditionally the Saturday before the 30th of October. The opening of the Basel Autumn fair is signalled by the Fair Bell of the Church of Saint Martin at exactly 12 o'clock.

Venues for the Basel Autumn fair

The best way to get to the fair with ease is by train. All the venues can be quickly and easily accessed by tram and bus from the Badischen Bahnhof and the SBB/SNCF railway station. There are car parks nearby and parking specially reserved for buses. If you would like to stay overnight, we advise you to contact Basel Tourism.

There are literally hundreds of goods and artisan stalls, plus food stalls and show booths at the Basel Autumn fair. Its range of all kinds of carousels is also very large and diverse. No wonder then that it spreads out across the whole city. It is also the largest combined festival (amusement park) and goods fair (retail) of its kind in Switzerland and the Upper Rhine region.
