On 13 March 2017, the first ever ‘Gourmet Market’ was held on Basel’s Marktplatz. Every Monday, this new market will offer a wide range of delicacies in a central location in Basel’s city centre. The Gourmet Market is an extension of the Stadtmarkt which is now being held from Tuesday to Saturday.
The Division of External Affairs and Marketing of the Canton of Basel-Stadt launched the ‘Gourmet Market’ as a complementary attraction to the Stadtmarkt. Every Monday from 8.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m., the market will offer a wide range of delicacies on Basel’s Marktplatz, extending the range of products offered on Basel’s Stadtmarkts on Marktplatz, which focuses predominantly on fresh regional products. Basel’s Stadtmarkt is taking place every Tuesday to Saturday at the same opening times (Tue to Thu from 7.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.; Fr/Sa from 7.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.).
Gourmet Market with street food atmosphere
According to Sabine Horvath, Head of the Division of External Affairs and Marketing of Basel-Stadt, the concept involves “creating a street food atmosphere at the Monday Gourmet Market.” Basel’s Marktplatz will turn into a meeting point for everyone looking for a spontaneous, uncomplicated food solution. The range of delicacies will appeal to both fans of traditional snacks and those who are open to new food trends, for instance street food. The focus is on sensual-creative, healthy yet fast and uncomplicated Food.
There will be a wide variety of delicacies on offer, including delicious burgers made from regional products, curry sausage and other grilled foods, meat balls, country cuts and a variety of chips, piadinas and various sandwiches, organic sour-dough bread and flatbread, a range of baked goods and café specialities, lunch menus with and without meat, etc. Comfortable seats invite visitors to linger on Marktplatz and the range of food on offer will expand continually.
