Strategic city partnerships are an integral part of Basel’s external relations policy and destination marketing efforts. That is why Basel focuses on activities which, directly or indirectly, result in the development of the city as a business and tourism destination. All of Basel’s city partnerships draw on the strengths of both partners.

Since its beginning on 19th November 2007, the city partnership with the Chinese metropolis Shanghai has led to numerous joint projects and exchange programmes in medicine, business, education and research, sustainable development, culture, and tourism.

The partnership with the U.S. state of Massachusetts goes back several years to 20th June 2002, when Massachusetts and the Canton of Basel-Stadt signed a sister-state agreement. Major areas of cooperation are research and knowledge, business, and culture.

Finally, Basel has been working closely with Miami Beach in connection with the art fair Art Basel Miami Beach since 2002. Then, on 28th November 2011, the two cities signed an agreement to further common interests in culture, tourism, business development, and education.
