Gladiator. The true story
Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig
Gladiatorial combat was part of the culture of ancient Rome, and Gladiators - contrary to what popular clichés may suggest - were not merely slaves who died gory deaths in the arena, but men striving for a Roman identity. In autumn 2019, the Gladiators are coming to the Antikenmuseum. The special exhibition reveals exciting facts about these brave man, whose hard work earned them a place in Roman society. Superb loans, mainly from Italy and Switzerland, and the latest scientific discoveries throw surprising new light on the life of Gladiator. In collaboration with our two Partners, the Museum Augusta Raurica and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, the Antikenmuseum will present a spectacular mise-en-scène, stunning exhibits, and interactive experiences.
