With "Goya", the Fondation Beyeler, in collaboration with the Prado in Madrid, is presenting one of the most important exhibitions outside of Spain of Francisco de Goya (1746-1828).
Rarely exhibited paintings from Spanish private collections will be on display for the first time, together with influential works from European and American museums. Over 70 paintings, selected masterful drawings and prints can be admired by visitors from 16 May to 16 August 2020.
Goya was one of the last great court painters and the first pioneer of modern art. During his transition from Rococo to Romanticism, he not only painted impressive portraits of members of the royal family and court, but was also a creator of enigmatic personal visual worlds, blurring the boundaries between reality and fantasy in his works that were far removed from social conventions. Goya's work depicts saints, criminals, witches and demons, illustrating the dramatic tension between reason and irrationality, between dreams and nightmares.
