Rodin/Arp

Fondation Beyeler

For the first time in a museum exhibition, Auguste Rodin's (1840-1917) and Hans Arp's (1886-1966) enter into dialogue. The groundbreaking work of the great innovator of late 19th century sculpture meets the influential work of a protagonist of 20th century abstract sculpture. Both artists are characterised by a unique artistic innovation and joy of experimentation. They created works that marked their time and have remained topical to this day. As sculptural milestones, the creations of Rodin and Arp illustrate in an impressive and exemplary way fundamental aspects in the development of modern sculpture. It was Rodin who introduced pioneering ideas and new artistic possibilities into sculpture, which were later taken up by Arp and developed, reinterpreted or contrasted in new ways. The extremely productive work of both sculptors shows numerous artistic affinities and points of reference, but also differences, which make the juxtaposition of their unmistakable works a particularly revealing visual experience.
In addition to the iconic works by both artists, the exhibition brings together lesser-known works that make their artistic relationship all the more vivid. While the exhibition focuses on Rodin and Arp's sculptures, it will also include Arp's reliefs, as well as drawings and collages by both artists.
