A festive Basel Christmas despite the Corona Pandemic

Basel will switch on its Christmas lights and decorations on Thursday, 26 November. Once again, the decorations in the city centre provide a special experience and remind us all that this is the season to do our Christmas shopping. At the same time, a series of events has been planned to remind us of the Christmas spirit. One of this year’s special attractions is the Ferris wheel on the Münsterplatz, from which the wonderful view over the city and its Christmas decorations can be admired. Sadly, the Basel Christmas Market has had to be cancelled because of the restrictions associated with the Covid pandemic, and there will also be no opening ceremony this year.

Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz

The Ferris wheel on the Münsterplatz is a particular highlight this year and, as a reminder of the 550th anniversary of the Basel Autumn Fair, will remain there until 3 January 2021, offering a spectacular view over Basel and its Christmas decorations. A series of illuminated snow globes in the trees on the Münsterplatz and round the Barfüsserkirche will create a magical atmosphere. The large illuminated Christmas star which dominated the Christmas Market from 1988 to 2016 will take its place again on the Barfüsserplatz this year. A sweet shop (or “candy store” if you are American), and a street organ will also add to the Christmas atmosphere.

Christmas events

In spite of the Covid pandemic, a number of events will remind us of Christmas. Shops will open their doors on Sunday 13 and Sunday, 20 December, giving you extra time for leisurely Christmas shopping amid the decorations and lights of the city centre. An exhibition featuring "patriotic Christmas decorations” will open its doors from 21 November 2020 to 14 February 2021 at the Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel (Basel World of Toys Museum), and the Haus zum Kirschgarten will also stage an exhibition of gorgeous Christmas trees with historical and modern Christmas tree decorations (1 December 2020 to 5 January 2021). A Christmas ferry and Christmas tram round off this far-ranging series of events.
