Hours before the Netherlands' third group match against France, thousands of Dutch fans turned Basel city centre orange. With singing, conga lines and a great atmosphere, they transformed the Barfüsserplatz fan zone into a party mile – and later joined French fans on their way to the stadium. Around 10,000 people took part in the fan march.

Even though it is still unclear who will be lifting the trophy at the end of the tournament, one thing is certain: the Dutch fans are considered the absolute number one when it comes to celebrating. From 4.15 p.m., supporters of the Oranje transformed the Barfi into a party venue. For around an hour, they got into the mood for the evening's match with loud chants, flags and the classic ‘Links Rechts’ song.

At 5.45 p.m., several thousand people gathered for the fan march on Münsterplatz. Led by the legendary double-decker bus, they set off for the stadium at 6 p.m. sharp, flanked by countless onlookers along Rittergasse. At the Wettstein Bridge, they finally met up with the supporters of the French team, who refused to be deterred and countered with frenetic chants of ‘Allez les Bleus’ despite being significantly outnumbered. Nevertheless, they gave way to the orange wave – in keeping with the spirit of previous fan marches, which were characterised not by rivalry but by applause, laughter and mutual support. Around 10,000 fans took part in the fan march.

‘Kick it like Beckham’ at Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz

The fan zones at Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz will be closed on Monday morning. They will reopen on Tuesday at 3 p.m. In the evening, the first ‘Movie Night’ will take place, featuring the films ‘Kick it like Beckham’ and ‘Die Nati: Mehr als 11 Fussballerinnen’ (The Swiss Women's National Team: More than 11 Footballers). On Wednesday, the first quarter-final match in Geneva is on the agenda. The complete programme with all fan experiences can be found here.
