Hours before kick-off, the atmosphere in the city centre was somewhere between a public festival and tense anticipation. Thousands of Spanish and English fans flocked to the fan zones on Sunday and marched colourfully towards St. Jakob Park.

The anticipation in the city was palpable early in the morning: at 8 a.m., the fan truck carrying Spanish supporters parked under the archway at the entrance to the fan zone on Barfüsserplatz. Spanish flags fluttered in the wind as more and more fans gathered to celebrate their team's historic place in the final. At 11 a.m. sharp, the fan zone officially opened its gates – and the Fiesta Roja got underway.

At the same time, the fan zone at Messeplatz in Kleinbasel filled with thousands of English fans cheering on their ‘Lionesses’ with songs, jerseys and flags. The atmosphere was exuberant. But it wasn't just fans of the two finalists who were in the fan zones: numerous local fans and visitors from other countries also took the opportunity to experience the final day. Among them was the FC Basel women's team, who were on hand for autographs and selfies.

Thousands of fans accompany the teams to the final

Three hours before kick-off, the fan marches took place once again, with supporters of both teams making their way to the stadium. These were supposed to be led by ‘Klamauk’, Jean Tinguely's mobile sculpture. Unlike the opening match, when unforeseen technical problems prevented the ride from being completed, this time it was the weather that prevented the departure. But the fan marches themselves have nevertheless developed into real highlights during the tournament – and word has obviously got around. Many spectators gathered early at the Kunstmuseum, where the fan camps met. And they were not disappointed: coming from the Messeplatz, a few minutes after 3 p.m., the 5,000 fans of the ‘Lionesses’ first appeared on the horizon, led in style by a classic black taxi.

Shortly afterwards, the Spanish delegation followed from Münsterplatz: although clearly outnumbered with 1,000 fans, they were at least as loud thanks to the use of several drums and three gaitas – the Galician version of the bagpipes. A few metres apart, the two groups set off together towards the ‘Joggeli’, with palpable anticipation of an unforgettable evening of football.

Conclusion of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 in Basel

The tournament month comes to an end tonight after the broadcast of the final match in the Fan Zone at Barfüsserplatz. The 15-piece Basel all-star band ‘Disco Experience’ will be inviting young and old alike to sing, dance and celebrate along to timeless 70s hits such as ‘We Are Family’, ‘So Excited’ and ‘Oh What a Night’ – in keeping with the spirit of a tournament that has had an impact far beyond the world of sport.
