Fan Zone Messeplatz: Movie nights on Non-match evenings
Media ReleaseErziehungsdepartement
Even on evenings when there are no games, the Fan Zone at Messeplatz remains a lively meeting place: on July 24, 25, and 26, Movie Nights invite visitors to indulge their football fever on the big screen. Exciting stories dedicated to the passion for soccer will be shown under the open sky on several screens in a relaxed atmosphere.
The Fan Zone at Messeplatz has been up and running for three weeks now and has become a place where movement, games, and shared experiences take center stage. Since Sunday, soccer movies have also been shown on screens throughout the venue in the evenings.
“It was important to us to select productions that offer different perspectives on soccer,” says Angelina Knörr from the event agency Adcom, which put together the program for the Fan Zones. “They show what lies behind this sport: personal struggles, social issues, and, last but not least, the power that this game can unleash.”
The film program at a glance
Admission is free, and all screenings are in German with subtitles. This ensures access for deaf people – an important concern for the host city of Basel in terms of inclusion and accessibility. The following films will be shown this week:
Thursday, July 24 – 7:00 p.m.
Die Nati – mehr als 11 Fussballerinnen
This documentary follows the Swiss women's national team on their journey to UEFA Women's Euro 2022. It shows not only top athletic performances, but also the everyday life, challenges, and diversity within the team. The result is a multi-layered portrait of identity, team spirit, and change in women's professional soccer.
Friday, July 25 – 7:00 p.m.
The Miracle of Bern
This film focuses on the surprising World Cup triumph of the German national team in Bern in 1954 – a moment that made soccer history. Parallel to the tournament, the film highlights the return of a former prisoner of war who is struggling to find his place in his family and society again. However, the relationship between father and son develops increasingly positively, buoyed by growing success on the pitch.
Saturday, July 26 – 7:00 p.m.
Weekend Rebels
This true story centers on ten-year-old Jason, whose autistic perception brings him into conflict with his school environment. When he is threatened with expulsion, his father suggests an unusual solution: every weekend, the two of them will attend the home game of a different soccer club. They will continue doing this until Jason finds the club he loves. What begins as an educational compromise develops into a moving father-son journey full of encounters, challenges, and unexpected closeness.
