More women in the ‘Joggeli’ than ever before

The teams from Germany and France, who had already celebrated one victory each at St. Jakob Park during this European Championship, returned to the scene of their triumph today – this time as direct opponents in the quarter-finals. History was made even before the match kicked off: for the first time, the majority of the crowd at a football match at St. Jakob Park was female. The two fan groups started three hours before kick-off at Messeplatz and Münsterplatz and joined forces at the Kunstmuseum for a fan march with over 4,000 participants.

French fans began gathering at Barfüsserplatz in the early afternoon, creating a lively atmosphere. Just a few tram stops away, German supporters transformed Messeplatz into a sea of black, red and gold. The double-decker bus was there again, setting off for Greater Basel shortly before 6 p.m. and leading the march of around 3,500 German fans. The French delegation, with around 500 participants, started from Münsterplatz and sang the Marseillaise for the first time after a few metres. The two groups then met at the Kunstmuseum. As in previous matches, the atmosphere was peaceful.
Record at St. Jakob Park
History was made today at the sold-out St. Jakob Park: for the first time, more women than men attended a football match. Around 52 per cent of tickets sold went to female spectators, with the largest group aged between 18 and 29. The three group matches in Basel were still predominantly attended by male spectators. ‘This is another record for the Women's European Football Championship in Basel,’ said Sabine Horvath, overall project manager for UEFA Women's Euro 2025 in Basel.
Movie Night with ‘Marinette’ at the Barfi and Messeplatz
Tomorrow, Sunday, the fan zones at Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz will reopen at 3 p.m. In the evening, the ‘Movie Night’ will begin at 7 p.m. on both squares with the film ‘Marinette – Fighter, Footballer, Legend’. It is the inspiring life story of Marinette Pichon. ‘Marinette – Fighter, Footballer, Legend’ depicts how she established herself in the 1990s as an exceptional figure in a male-dominated sport and became a pioneer for the visibility of women and LGBTQIA+ people.
This will be followed at 9.15 p.m. by ‘Das Wunder von Bern’ (The Miracle of Bern) on Barfüsserplatz. This film not only pays tribute to Germany's sensational World Cup victory in 1954, but also depicts the personal crisis of a returning prisoner of war and his family reunion. Both productions will be shown in German. Subtitles will be in German for the movie ‘Marinette – Fighter, Footballer, Legend’ and in English for the second movie, ‘Das Wunder von Bern’. The complete programme with all fan experiences can be found here.
