Protective measures against heat and sun in the fan zones

The UEFA Women's Euro fan zones open in Basel on 1 July. The weather forecasts promise beautiful summer weather for the start of the tournament. Temperatures are expected to exceed 35 degrees, which is why the organisers are implementing numerous measures in the fan zones to protect against the heat and sun. These measures are based on the Host City Basel sustainability charter, which includes sun cream dispensers and sunshades as well as refreshment stations, spray showers and, last but not least, cool retreats in the fan zones.
The atmosphere at major events such as the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 depends on more than just the sporting action – the weather also plays a key role in creating a good atmosphere. The project organisation wanted good weather for the opening match in Basel. However, the weather forecasts promise both fine weather and very high temperatures, which is why health protection in the fan zones is of great importance. ‘We were hoping for good weather, but now we have to make sure that the fan zones are as pleasant as possible despite the heat,’ says Sabine Horvath, overall project manager of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025 in Basel, describing the situation.
Measures in the fan zones: Shade, water and relaxation
The catalogue of measures in the sustainability charter for the tournament in Basel places particular emphasis on the well-being of visitors in the fan zones. A wide range of measures are planned to protect against the sun and heat: Sunshades will be set up at Barfüsserplatz and Messeplatz and handy climate fans will be distributed containing practical tips to combat the heat. Refreshment stations with drinking water and spray showers will also be set up. In addition, the Industrielle Werke Basel, the city's principal utility supplier, has labelled all fountains in the fan perimeter as sources of drinking water. Those who need to escape the hustle and bustle for a short time will find cool and quiet in the Stadtcasino under the motto ‘Play and Chill’ with listening, reading and gaming offers. At the Messeplatz, the City Lounge in the front area of the Fan Zone offers protection from the sun. The grandstand at the Soccer Court is also covered.
Basel Tourism's pop-up Rhine swimming programme provides a chance to cool off in the Rhine. On all match days in Basel, a lifeguard at Tinguely Beach provides information about potential dangers. Basel Tourism will also be on site, selling the popular Wickelfisch – a swim bag in the shape of a fish which was invented in Basel – and answering questions. In addition to the four sun cream dispensers in the fan zones, there will be six more Beiersdorf sun cream dispensers along the Rhine during the tournament.
Adjusted rules for stadium visitors
UEFA is reacting with adapted rules for the first two matches in Basel and Thun: Due to the heat warning, fans are allowed to bring a water bottle of up to 0.5 litres into the stadium for the matches on 2 July (plastic or aluminium, no glass), UEFA informs.
The City of Basel and its partners are looking forward to welcoming many visitors and wish everyone a safe and enjoyable tournament experience.
