Together with the Swimmable Cities Alliance, the event organiser, the Canton of Basel-Stadt is hosting the international event. Around 100 representatives from public administration, politics, urban planning, tourism, academia and other organisations will discuss the future of swimmable cities and urban waterways.

Basel offers the ideal conditions for this: the Rhine shapes life in the city, and swimming in the river has been part of everyday culture for decades. This development began after the pollution of the Rhine caused by the Schweizerhalle chemical accident in 1986. These experiences make Basel an important practical example for other cities.

The forum will focus on four themes: urban strategies, water safety, waterfront investment, and ‘sponge city’ principles for climate adaptation. The day before, participants will have the opportunity to take part in the official Basel Rhine Swim and experience Basel’s river culture first-hand.

In addition to facilitating professional exchange, the forum offers Basel a valuable opportunity to showcase the city’s exceptionally high quality of life to an international audience and to benefit from the multiplier effects within the network.
