Europe
Basel is the gateway to Europe and, from a European perspective, the gateway to Switzerland. Good relations between Switzerland and Europe are therefore crucial for the location's success. The Canton maintains close ties with the neighbouring regions of Baden-Württemberg, the Collectivité européenne d’Alsace (CeA), and the Grand-Est region. In addition, the Canton of Basel-Stadt participates in various corporate activities, thematic platforms, and political meetings.

Massachusetts (USA)
Partnership since 2002
The partnership with Massachusetts focuses on the economy, education, research, and innovation. It promotes exchange between universities, research institutions, businesses, and public bodies.

Shanghai (China)
Partnership since 2007
Shanghai is the economic hub of the People’s Republic of China and a globally significant centre for life sciences. This partnership provides a stable framework for Basel’s life sciences sector to engage in high-level political dialogue. The Canton supports educational exchange programmes, and the department participates in regular consultations on China between the Swiss Confederation and the cantons. In addition to shared interests, the Canton of Basel-Stadt upholds Switzerland’s core values and fundamental rights, such as democracy, the rule of law, and human rights, within the framework of this partnership. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs supports this approach.
