With the net zero target by 2037 and a fully renewable electricity supply, Basel is setting standards throughout Europe. Basel enables climate-friendly travel to the city and mobility on site: By 2027, the public bus transport will operate completely emission-free. Combined with an above-average charging infrastructure and the BaselCard offering free public transport, event organisers and visitors benefit from a simple and sustainable mobility system.

Basel has experience in hosting sustainable international large-scale events and can competently advise event organisers in this respect. With international events such as the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 and the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, Basel has demonstrated how sustainability can be successfully implemented. The developed concepts and experiences serve as a basis for future events.

St. Jakob-Park

St. Jakob-Park, the largest stadium in Switzerland, has been relying on sustainable energy supply and resource-efficient operation for many years. Since 2013, the stadium roof has been home to a photovoltaic system covering approximately 5,200 m², which generates around 810,000 kWh of electricity annually.

Sustainable measures are also implemented in the event operations, for example, reusable systems to reduce waste and the promotion of climate-friendly mobility.

St. Jakobshalle

The St. Jakobshalle Basel was comprehensively modernised between 2014 and 2018 and is now among the most modern multifunctional venues in Europe. The venue is equipped with energy-efficient building technology and sustainable operational standards. The renovation of the building envelope meets the Minergie standard for modernisations – a voluntary Swiss building standard for energy-efficient and climate-friendly construction. In addition, photovoltaic projects on cantonal buildings are being expanded; the St. Jakobshalle is among the locations with particularly high solar potential.

In event operations, continuous measures are being implemented to increase energy efficiency – including optimised ventilation controls, modern LED technology, and sustainable mobility solutions in the context of international events such as the Swiss Indoors Basel. The venue is also part of the sustainable further development of the entire St. Jakob area and has excellent public transport connections.

Exhibition and Congress Centre Basel

The Exhibition and Congress Centre Basel produces approximately 2 million kWh of renewable electricity annually through its own photovoltaic systems and provides event organisers with a CO₂ infrastructure report for the transparent recording of emissions. Support with CO₂ compensation is also offered as a supplementary service.

The infrastructure is continuously developed and meets recognised sustainability certifications such as the Sustainability Performance Standard (SPS) and Swisstainable. Individual event areas also meet high energy standards, such as the Minergie standard (Label BS-054).
