Infrastructure – Driving Competitiveness and Growth

Basel-Stadt continued to deliver strong, future ready conditions for sustainable growth and innovation in 2025. Strategic site developments across the canton are strengthening the pipeline for new business activity and supporting the establishment of high‑potential companies. The Tech Park Basel and the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area provide the essential infrastructure required for technology-driven startups to scale. Together, they foster a dynamic, innovation-friendly environment that enhances the canton’s competitiveness and reinforces its position as a leading European hub for science-based enterprise.

For Technology Startups

The Tech Park Basel provides global technology start‑ups with a high‑quality, flexible working environment. Young companies benefit from modern office space and fully equipped plug‑and‑play laboratories, available on attractive terms and designed to be immediately operational while remaining fully adaptable. A suite of modular support services complements the physical infrastructure, offering companies tailored assistance as they scale. Facilities of this calibre are typically found only on large industrial campuses - and often require the rental of extensive floor space.

Since its establishment in 2011, the Tech Park Basel has evolved into a dynamic life‑sciences ecosystem with strong international appeal. In 2025, the site hosted an average of 350 employees from 47 countries, reflecting its global reach and relevance.

Overall utilisation in 2025 developed more cautiously than anticipated. The number of resident companies declined from 31 to 26, while the Tech Park welcomed two new entrants: Zenith Therapeutics and Amporin Pharmaceuticals.

The strategic development of the Tech Park Basel was a central priority in 2025. Under the guiding theme »TPB 2.0», a series of team workshops identified key areas for improvement, and the first measures were put into practice. These included:

Renovation and upgrade works — modernising core infrastructure

Optimisation of internal processes — improving operational efficiency

Enhancements to the intranet and digital tenant platform — strengthening the digital user experience

The Tech Park Basel also continued deliver on its environmental and climate objectives. The planned conversion of older building sections to LED lighting was completed, contributing to reduced energy consumption and supporting the sustainable evolution of the site’s infrastructure.

The building continues to meet the standards of the SNBS 2.0 and BREEAM certifications. The Tech Park Basel also maintains its commitment to 100% renewable electricity supplied by IWB, alongside energy‑efficient district heating and cooling. Responsible resource management remains a core principle in facility operations and day‑to‑day management.

Across the wider ecosystem, 137 companies were active at the Switzerland Innovation Park Basel Area (SIP) in Allschwil, Basel and the Canton of Jura at the end of 2025. Of these, 55 were technology startups, primarily in Digital Health, employing 144 staff at the SIP site on the Novartis Campus. s Campus aktiv.

Economic Areas and Strategic Site Development

The commercial property market in Basel‑Stadt continued to stabilise in 2025. Office space, in particular, saw a marked increase in utilisation as companies leased new or larger premises, prompting a series of relocations and substantial rent agreements. Office environments are once again gaining importance as a complement to home office models. Additional momentum is coming from major transformation sites, which will broaden the range of available space in the coming years — especially in production facilities, where offer remains tight, but demand is strong. These trends are summarised in the canton’s annual Commercial Space Report (in German only).

The market for laboratory space is developing strongly. Real-estate stakeholders are responding proactively to sustained demand by bringing a diverse range of new laboratory offerings to market over the coming years, particularly around the Klybeckplus development area and Stücki Park. These sites are positioning themselves as high‑specialisation locations for biotech companies, offering space solutions suitable for organisations of every size.

Rent Relief for Technology Startups

The rent relief programme for technology‑oriented startups was successfully continued in 2025 and aligned even more closely with the strategic innovation priorities of the Canton of Basel‑Stadt. In total, eleven companies received support during their early development phase, benefiting from contributions that reduced their rental costs. Funding is available for a maximum of three years, covering up to 50% of annual rent, capped at 30,000 Swiss Francs per company and year.

Nine of the supported companies operate within the Life Sciences innovation field, with several positioned at the intersection of biotechnology and digital innovation. Two additional companies belong to the Sustainable Economy innovation field. This distribution reflects the programme’s clear focus on the canton’s strategic priority areas.

Through this targeted approach, the rent relief scheme makes a meaningful contribution to strengthening innovation and supporting the sustainable development of Basel‑Stadt as a competitive business location.
