Introduction

Katja Jenni-Szaloky und Samuel Hess

As a hub for leading global companies and research organizations, Basel-Stadt ranks among Switzerland’s most productive economic regions. With a 36 percent* share, the canton Basel-Stadt contributes significantly to national exports, while also delivering the highest per capita value added in Switzerland.

Launched in 2025, the Basel Incentive Package is a pioneering initiative that, on behalf of the voters of Basel-Stadt, distributes 150 to 500 million Swiss francs annually, primarily to companies that invest in society, the environment, or innovation. It is no coincidence that the canton dedicates 80 percent of these funds to boost innovation – it is innovation, which has the greatest leverage to sustain the attractiveness of Basel-Stadt and ultimately value creation and job security.

The existing innovation programmes, with strategic focuses on life sciences, digitalization, and sustainable economy, were expanded in 2025. With Basel2037, the ninth programme was launched in August under the motto »Promoting the Economy: Net Zero by 2037,» supporting SMEs in Basel-Stadt in reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. Basel2037 is the result of close collaboration between the Canton of Basel-Stadt and the Basel-Stadt Trade Association - an example of how the canton and the business community are working together to create solutions that strengthen the region’s position in a sustainable manner.

We also have continued to evolve internally: In September 2025, Katja Jenni-Szaloky joined as Co-Head of the Economic Affairs Division at the Office of Economic Affairs and Labor. With many years of proven experience in international cooperation, communication, and business promotion, she contributes to shaping the strategic direction of the division.

National and international networks and collaboration will continue to play a vital role in 2026. With the WEF Basel Morning in the run-up to the 2026 World Economic Forum, the canton sent a strong signal. The platform brought together representatives from the global pharmaceutical industry, international investors, startups, politics, science, and administration to discuss the challenges and prospects of the global life sciences industry and set new priorities for the region’s further development.

In 2026, we will continue to build on this solid foundation and in tight collaboration with all stakeholders shaping Basel as a preferred business hub. A first result of this co-creation is the FoodHealth program. Fostering innovation in agri- and foodtech, it is a joined launch with the Canton of Aargau.

We thank all our partners for the excellent cooperation and look forward to continuing it.

On behalf of the Economic Development Division at the Office for Economy and Labor,

Samuel Hess
