Development cooperation of the Canton of Basel-Stadt

Basel is committed to improving the living conditions of the world’s poorest. The canton donates 1.65 million Swiss francs every year to foreign development cooperation projects. The development opportunities of the population in the poorest countries of the world, or in particularly disadvantaged regions, should be considerably improved with the help of these financial contributions. The development cooperation of the Canton of Basel-Stadt is involved exclusively in projects abroad that focus on thematic priorities (healthcare, agriculture, education, promoting trade, etc.).

The Commission for Development Cooperation meets twice a year and decides on the applications submitted. When assessing the applications, the Commission focuses on a set of criteria (quality, relevance, effectiveness, impact, sustainability, transparency of funding, ethical aspects). It is ensured that there is a certain rotation when it comes to the allocation of funds, and charities that are domiciled in the region are given special consideration.
