Development cooperation of the Canton of Basel-Stadt
Basel is committed to improving the living conditions of the world’s poorest. The canton donates 2 million Swiss francs every year to foreign development cooperation projects. The financial contributions are intended to sustainably improve the development prospects of the population in the poorest countries in the world or in specifically disadvantaged regions.
The development cooperation of the Canton of Basel-Stadt is involved exclusively in projects abroad that focus on thematic priorities (healthcare, agriculture, education, promoting trade, etc.).
The Commission for Development Cooperation meets twice a year to select projects. The proposals are assessed according to a set of criteria (quality of the proposal, relevance, effectiveness, impact, sustainability, transparency of funding and ethical aspects of the project). A degree of rotation in the allocation of funds is taken into consideration, as are organisations domiciled in the region.
